    Entries in the Travel/Destinations Category

This category consists of all the blog entries from our adventures in our Motorhome where we lived on the road for 4 years as well as any other travel related entries. It was an amazing journey and I love to look back through these entries, it makes me long for living on the road again, there was just something so freeing about it. However we have recently acquired “Nora’s Ark” and the adventures have continued to a lesser degree but it does satisfy my Wanderlust from time to time. So I invite you to look at the world through our eyes and perhaps get different view of the world around us.

Taken by Randy during the Skipjack races on Deal Island, MD

We arrived at Deal Island with a sound asleep Nora, after an hour straight of screaming. She just wanted out of the VAN! She endured 20 hours over 3 days stuck in the car seat and just could not handle another minute. So I pulled over and just by pure luck, was an upscale gated subdivision with the gate wide open. We drove in and stopped along the fountains at the entrance. I got out with Nora and immediately she stopped crying. She loves fountains and moving water. After holding …

Nora and Daddy playing in the splash area

I guess I need to rename our travel blog from Dogparks and Brewpubs, to Dogparks and Playgrounds :) Since Nora has begun walking we have made a point to search out big playgrounds for her to check out. Right now though I think it is probably more fun for us than her *LOL* Our search this time was while visiting Charleston S.C.
We headed out to James Island County Park which we had visited in the past due to the excellent dog park they built. It is a top notch …

Nora and daddy cruising the Kiawah Island County Park Beach

Sharon and I headed out on a road trip to see her parents on Deal Island, MD and family in Baltimore, MD. To help make the trip easier we made a stopover in Charleston S.C. to see our friends Kevin and Jason. And while there we wanted to explore Kiawah Island as we have never been there.
The drive down highway 171 was spectacular. The live oak trees had overgrown the road to form a dense tunnel with their branches from which long flowing strands of spanish moss hung from waving …

    February 2010, Snowbirds Cover

Hello my name is Randy Hamilton and I traveled with my wife Sharon and 2 dogs, Jack and Jinjer, for over 4 years full-time in our 36′ 1998 Cruisemaster motor home. When I was first asked by Snowbirds to write an article about being Snowbirds I was caught a little off-guard. I never really thought of us as snowbirds per say, but just people who hated cold weather and drifted south until winter was over. Which come to find out, is EXACTLY what a snowbird is. However, the fact that …

Pops, Nora, Aimee, Sharon and Rachie at the condo

You will understand the headline later in the story so I ask you to bear with me as I write this entry mostly for myself to preserve the details of a great weekend.
This past weekend Sharon’s parents along with her sister and her husband, and her other sister came to visit. We rented a 5 bedroom, 4 story condo just across from the beach for 4 days so we could all stay in the same place. The condo itself was incredible, between the view and being within walking distance …

I have used this title before for a blog, and I find myself once again struck with wanderlust
Wanderlust – wan·der·lust \ˈwän-dər-ˌləst\ noun • German, from wandern to wander + Lust desire, pleasure:
Wanderlust is a loanword from German to English that designates a strong desire for or impulse to wander, or, in modern usage, to travel and to explore the world.
Watching the movie Into the Wild (which was also a previous subject in an entry) makes me start thinking about our life on the road. My body may be sitting still …

It was a hard thing to do, but what was previously our travel blog website, dogparksandbrewpubs.com has been decommissioned. We now have visitors routed to the One Shoe Diaires where our blog now resides. But to keep the distinction between the old and new posts we created a category titled DogParks and Brewpubs which will contain all of the entries from our journeys in the motor home.
Here is a little background on why we titled it Dogparks and Brewpubs. As most of you know we traveled with our dogs, Jack …

We went to The Brewer’s Art brewpub with Nanny in Baltimore. I read about on the internet and had to go. And to call it a brewpub is to call Mount Everest just a hill (or something like that). Anyway this place was incredible, the best brewpub yet. Starting with the food, which was gourmet, yet made for everyday people. We had sauteed calamari with bamboo shoots, eggplant, water chestnuts and red curry broth; Tuscan tomato soup with parmesan gougeres; Pork Barbeque Sandwich with chipolte-resurrection beer BBQ sauce on homemade …

Shoe #258, found on route 13 near Salisbury, MD

On the road from Deal Island to Baltimore is the small maritime village of St. Michaels. Known for its history and upscale residents it is full of small quant shops and restaurants. It is truly a neat place to go and walk around, kinda like Williamsburg but on a smaller and more intimate scale. We planned on hitting the St. Michael’s Winery first, which should come as no surprise.
The tasting room had a rustic feel to it, very authentic. The wines we tried were the reds, they had a couple …

Feeling like we needed a break from real life for a day or so because of all that has happened to us, we planned a quick getaway from Rachie’s place in Port Charlotte to Key West.
Our getaway to Key West got off to a rough start, literally. First getting up at 5:30 to drive to Fort Myers was tough but it was the Key West High Speed Express boat ride that was rough. We know refer to it as the “barf barge.” The Gulf was still angry from Tropical Storm …
