Entries in the Gang Chronicles Category

Growing up I made some lifetime friendship bonds with 12 other guys. As we all hung out together pretty much 24/7 we began to be known as “The Gang”. Still to this day most of all keep in constant contact. This category is a collection of stories I have written of memorable moments from our adventures together. I feel very blessed to have such colorful characters in my life such as Skippy, Scooter, Sean, Jason, Mark, Gary, Trish, Jeff, Wayne, Kevin, and others. I hope you enjoy these entries even half as much as I did writing them.

Found while participating in the "Santa Monica Road Rally", more like the daily rat race in L.A. And wouldn't you know it, a cop stopped and wanted to know what I was doing. Of all the crime going on in L.A., they take the time to stop and harass someone just taking a photo of a shoe.

Many times when some of the Gang gets together we like to reminisce about the old times, we retell stories from our past of adventures and sometimes-stupid exploits. We always ended up laughing until our faces hurt. But rarely do we all get together in one place, and even more rarely do we get to create new stories to be retold. This past August we got to do both.
It was Sean’s wedding and Skippy, Jason, Mark, Gary, Scooter, Dink, Trish, Kevin, Jeff and I all went out to L.A. for …

This is a shot from Spring Break 1988. From top left to right: Scooter, Me, Sean, Mark, Jason, Jeff, Chris, Gary and Skippy at far bottom left.

This is a story I have wanted to write for some time now. It is the story about how my friendship with Jim, a.k.a. Skippy, and most of all The Gang all began. It is weird though as I do not remember life without Skippy, he just seemed to have always been there.
I must add, Jim did not get the name Skippy until he was 17-18 years old but that is a story for another time.
I guess the earliest memory of us belongs to Skippy. He claims that he remembers …

This is something you never want to see coming towards you. If you do, run!

One thing Skippy is known for unfortunately, has been his flatulants, or farts as most people refer to them. Ever since I can remember it has been a problem. However Skippy has had fun with his “talent”.

A story that goes way back, back when we around 12 years old, is from our trip to Hershey. We never actually made it to Hershey as we got into trouble for horsing around and his mom punished us by bypassing Hershey but I digress.

I will pick this story up from a somewhat foggy, foggy as in mentally foggy, night out in Vegas when we were scheduled to trek to California in the morning. It was around 2 a.m. and for whatever reason, could have had something to do with Tequila shots, we decided we would head out to California right then and there. We took a cab back to Mark’s apartment where we tried to sober up with some coffee and pack our stuff.
Sean must have lost a bet somehow, or been the …

This is a photo of the sheet of paper we used as a travel log during the road trip. Some things are pretty funny to read again. It does help us remember what happened, as the trip is pretty foggy to all those involved. Especially the week we spent in Vegas but only remember the one night :) There was a map along with this sheet that had the corresponding numbers located where they happened but that has since been lost :(

During spring break 1990 my friends Jason, Jim (aka Skippy) and I decided to drive to Vegas to hang out with our other good friend and fellow “Gang” member Mark who at the time was attending the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). In addition Sean would be flying out to meet us in Vegas the day we arrive. That could be a recipe for fun or disaster, but most likely a mixture of both which creates an opportunity for a very memorable time.
Back in Ohio we came up with …

This van was one of my favorite vehicles, it could hold three mountain bikes inside and still have room for their riders. It went off-road like it was made for it and never broke down. Sometimes I miss the Van.

Skippy, you will be happy to know, this is not another story about you.
In addition to the Opel, another legendary vehicle I owned was The Van. It was a copper 1989 Toyota Mini Van. I had bought it on a credit card from a dealership in Cincinnati during a bad snowstorm and got a great deal on it. It had 120K miles on it, but I just knew it had a lot more in it. It ran for a long time, accumulating over 200K miles on it before the odometer …

Well I am going to write yet another Skippy story, but hey, what can I say, we had some fun times. I mentioned our apartment in Columbus’ South Ghetto in the Opel story, but did not go into much detail. And I am sorry to say the stories about the “G” spot bar we operated out of there will come at another time, preferably after consulting a lawyer first :)
This one starts with me hanging out in the basement of the townhouse where my room was located. I was doing …

Jason the Hitman, Apple Downtown, Instant Justice, Superfly Adams. Now there is a nickname! but what’s funny is every part of that name actually has some sort of story behind it and fits my friend Jason’s personality perfectly. But i am not going to get into those stories at this time. I am opting to tell the stories of when I would catch a ride with him to school.
As soon as we were old enough to drive we stopped riding the bus to school. Jason had procured a parking pass …

The Opel on the day we had our last drive together.

The previous stories I have written focused on a character in my life who enhanced it through unforgettable events based around friendship. This story is basically the same, except about a different type of friendship, one of a man and his vehicle. Cars have been portrayed as having personalities in many movies and books. Christine, Kit from Nightrider, Herbie the love bug and in my world it was the Opel.
This is a story that I am not sure should be put in writing so I am going to put this …

This is not Skippy\'s neck x-ray and only here for dramatic effect.

** If you happened upon this page by searching for xray pics and expected to find information about neck injuries, I apologize, by nonetheless we invite you to read this funny story about my friend’s neck pain)
In order to keep on the momentum of the last story in regards to Skippy’s ballistic personality I am going to tell the “My neck hurts” story.
Like most of the Skippy stories, this one took place years ago when we were about 19-20 years old. It was Spring Break, one of the most …
