chrysops_unknown_adult_dorsal_m_01I have written several entries on this destination, and it can be a great place to visit, so I will keep this short and explain the title.

One evening I decided I wanted to brave the insects that the Island is infamous for and drive down to the dock and fish for a bit. I put on long sleeve shirt and pants, doused myself in deet bug spray and go into the truck and headed out. After parking I immediately saw bugs already landing all over the windows, like they smelled my blood and were trying to find a way to get in the truck. I was second guessing a bit, but figured I was protected.

I climbed out and grabbed my gear and began my 50 yard walk to the dock. The buzzing in my ears was really starting to ramp up as deer flies began checking me out. They must have alerted their friends because in seconds the buzzing became a roar. I think the deet attracted them and they get high off the smell because they were in a frenzy and began biting me on the neck and forehead. They even bit me through my shirt. ( I am becoming itchy again just writing this :) I thought maybe it would calm down a little, but they were relentless! I felt assaulted. They attacked me worse than I have ever been attacked by bugs. Even as was in the truck driving they were still actively feeding on me.

And that’s all I have to say about that.
